Roberta Fantoni

Expert in lasers, spectroscopy, remote sensing and applied physics

Role

Head of the Physical Technologies for Safety and Health Division (FSN-TECFIS) at ENEA

Bio

She graduated in Chemistry from the University of Rome La Sapienza in 1978 with a thesis on gas-phase electronic spectroscopy. After a period of scholarships, she was hired by ENEA in 1982 to collaborate on the laser-assisted uranium isotope enrichment project, after which she spent several periods of specialization abroad (Catholic University of Nijmegen , ETH Zurich). Her professional experience in laser diagnostics and photochemistry led her to become head of the FIS-SPET "Molecular Spectroscopy" Section at ENEA in Frascati in 1998, a position she held until 2010. In 2010, she was appointed head of the entire Technical Unit "Radiation Applications" (UTAPRAD) at ENEA Frascati. Following the latest restructuring of ENEA, she became head of the TECFIS division, also in Frascati, a position she still holds.

Since the beginning of her career, Roberta Fantoni has been involved in multidisciplinary research and projects at the intersection of chemistry and physics (spectroscopy and chemical processes). Subsequently, still in the field of radiation-matter interaction, she has conducted research on processes of broader applicative interest, from biology to medicine to cultural heritage. Throughout her career, she has established and maintained contacts with scientists responsible for research in European laboratories of excellence (in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Romania, Slovenia, and Spain) and in other countries around the world (Russia, Egypt). Her research activities have been primarily funded through bilateral cooperation projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).
