Angela Bracco

Expert in nuclear physics, experimental physics, spectroscopy and astrophysics

Role

Full Professor of Physics at the University of Milan and President of the Italian Physical Society; President of the Enrico Fermi Historical Museum of Physics and Study and Research Center (CREF).

Bio

After graduating in Physics from the University of Milan, Angela Bracco earned her Ph.D. in 1984 from the University of Manitoba, Canada, one of the founding universities of the TRIUMF laboratory in Vancouver. Her research focuses on experimental nuclear physics , with a particular focus on gamma ray spectroscopy for nuclear structure.

After returning to Italy, she spent periods as a researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. Since 2002, she has been a full professor at the University of Milan. From 2005 to 2011, she was President of the INFN National Scientific Commission for Nuclear Physics and, from 2011 to 2015, a member of the INFN Board of Directors representing the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR).

His scientific work studies nuclear structure using light and heavy ion beams from accelerators, collective excitations of nuclei, and dipole vibrations in unstable nuclei. This research has implications for nuclear astrophysics , particularly for models of heavy-nucleosynthesis and the description of neutron stars.

She participated in the development of scintillation and highly segmented solid-state detectors for gamma radiation measurements. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Italian Physical Society's journals, Supervisory Editor of Nuclear Physics A, and a member of the EPJ Steering Committee. She has been President of the Italian Physical Society since 2020 and President of CREF since 2024. She is a member of the Academia Europaea, the Academy of Sciences of the Bologna Institute, and the Lombardy Institute.
