Role
Full Professor of Computer Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Turin; Director of the VANDAL Laboratory; Rector's Advisor for Artificial Intelligence; Director of the AI@PoliTO Hub
Bio
He graduated in Physics in 1998 from Sapienza University of Rome and went on to earn a Master's degree in Biomedical Signal and Image Processing. His research continued abroad, including at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco, and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, where he earned a PhD in Computer Science in 2005.
She works in Switzerland at the Idiap Institute in Martigny, where she leads the Artificial Cognitive Systems group. In 2013, she returned to Italy as an Associate Professor at Sapienza University of Rome. Since 2018, she has been at the Polytechnic University of Turin, where she is a Full Professor of Computer Engineering, directs the AI@PoliTO Hub, and leads the VANDAL Laboratory.
His primary research interest is the development of algorithms for learning, recognizing, and categorizing visual and multimodal patterns for artificial autonomous systems. Leading the Visual Learning and Multimodal Perception group, he develops artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions to enable robots to learn from external sources and interact in complex contexts.
Applications include home robotics and assistance for the elderly, people with disabilities, and children. Since 2019, she has been an ELLIS Fellow and on the board of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems Society. She has been involved in national policy documents on artificial intelligence and coordinated the National Doctorate on AI & Industry 4.0. In 2014, she received the European Research Council Starting Grant for the RoboExNovo project.
