Expert in cell biology, neurodegenerative diseases, protein engineering and iron metabolism

Role

Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, where she is also a Full Professor of Applied Biology. She is Head of the Iron Metabolism Proteomics Unit, Division of Neuroscience, at San Raffaele Hospital, and Co-President of the Top Italian Women Scientists Club.

Bio

After graduating in Biological Sciences from the University of Milan in 1982, she continued her training at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Technologies at San Raffaele Hospital. In 1984, she received an EMBO fellowship at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg , where she learned recombinant DNA techniques applied to protein expression . Returning to Italy in 1986 with a fellowship from the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, she joined the Iron Metabolism Laboratory, where she obtained recombinant human ferritins and their mutants for the study of complex protein structures.

From 1992 to 2002, he refined his research in the protein engineering laboratory at the Department of Biotechnology Research at the San Raffaele Institute. In 2001, he isolated a novel human mitochondrial ferritin, focusing on its biological characterization and the analysis of alterations in iron metabolism in the brain and the molecular mechanisms linked to certain neurodegenerative diseases .

Full Professor of Applied Biology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, she will assume the role of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in 2025. She is also currently Head of the Iron Metabolism Proteomics Unit at San Raffaele Hospital and Co-President of the Top Italian Women Scientists Club . A Top Italian Women Scientist , she is the author of over 150 international scientific publications.
