Bio
After graduating in Biological Sciences from the University of Catania in 1976, she earned a second degree in Medicine and Surgery and a specialization in Clinical Microbiology and Virology. She completed significant training periods abroad, particularly in London and at the University of Tennessee, consolidating her experience in microbiology and related disciplines.
Since 1991, she has developed her academic career as an associate professor of Clinical Microbiology at the University of Milan. Over the years, she has coordinated research groups dedicated to epidemic and health bioemergencies —including SARS and Ebola—and has also been appointed to the National Commission on AIDS.
At the Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan, she designed and led the development of high-security biosafety laboratories for the management of biological crises. The laboratory she previously directed has become the reference center for the diagnosis of tropical diseases, anthrax risks, and other infectious emergencies related to pandemics and biological threats. Having completed her institutional career in 2024, she continues to work in the field of global health through strategic consulting and scientific dissemination.
