Cecilia Garlanda

Expert in immunology, immunopathology, inflammation, infections and cancer

Role

Head of the Experimental Immunopathology Laboratory at the IRCCS Istituto Clinico Humanitas and Full Professor of Clinical Pathology at Humanitas University in Rozzano (Milan); Group Leader of the Garlanda Group - Experimental Immunopathology Lab

Bio

After graduating in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Milan in 1990, she specialized in immunopathology, working in laboratories in Italy and abroad, including the Immunology Laboratory of the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research from 1990 to 2005, and the Department of Molecular Biology of the Center for Nuclear Studies in Grenoble from 1994 to 1995. She is currently head of the Experimental Immunopathology Laboratory at the Humanitas Clinical Institute. Her interests include immune system cells and the characterization of their biological activity, innate immunity to pathogens, and the regulation of inflammatory processes.

The research group headed by Cecilia Garlanda has focused on the study of PTX3, an innate immune molecule involved in resistance to fungal, bacterial, and viral infections and in the regulation of inflammation. The group recently highlighted that PTX3 creates an environment hostile to tumor growth by regulating the inflammation generated in the tumor microenvironment. Cecilia Garlanda is also involved in preclinical studies and studies aimed at translating the findings into clinical practice.
