Role
Full Professor of Molecular Biology, Department of Cellular, Computational and Integrative Biology - CIBIO, University of Trento; head of the Laboratory of Advanced Genome Editing Technologies (LAGET)
Bio
After graduating in Biological Sciences from the University of Genoa in 1990, he moved to the United States, to Bethesda, to work at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he studied the molecular biology of retroviruses. In 1998, he continued his work in New York, first as a postdoc at Cornell University and then as an Instructor at the Institute of Gene Therapy, Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Upon returning to Italy, she worked at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and subsequently at the International Centre of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) in Trieste. She then became a researcher at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, where she headed the Laboratory of Molecular Biology. She is currently a full professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Trento, where she teaches Gene Therapy.
At the CIBIO Department, she conducts research on the biotechnological development of molecular tools for genome editing , to be applied in gene therapies for the treatment of genetic diseases, with a particular focus on cystic fibrosis. Her scientific career has also focused on the study of retroviruses, the mechanisms of HIV-1 infection, and virally caused tumors. She is co-inventor of three patents and co-founder and scientific advisor of the academic start-up Alia Therapeutics.
