Role
Senior Researcher at the Scientific Directorate of the IRCCS European Institute of Oncology (IEO), Milan.
Bio
After graduating in organic chemistry from the University of Genoa in 1979, she specialized in oncology both in Italy and abroad. She worked at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich and for the National Institute of Health in the United States. Upon returning to Italy, she directed the Molecular Oncology Laboratory at the National Institute for Cancer Research, where she became Deputy Scientific Director and Director of the Department of Translational Oncology. In 2002, she qualified for university teaching and headed the "Research Infrastructure and Statistics" Department at the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova in Reggio Emilia.
She currently directs the Vascular Biology and Angiogenesis Laboratory at IRCCS MultiMedica in Sesto San Giovanni (MI) and is the Scientific Director of Fondazione MultiMedica Onlus. She is a visiting professor of General Pathology at the University of Milan-Bicocca.
Adriana Albini has never stopped conducting scientific research. Her main fields of interest are: vascular biology, invasion and metastasis, angiogenesis, the microenvironment, chemoprevention, immunopathogenesis related to AIDS and AIDS-associated tumors, and gene therapy with cytokines (polypeptide mediators that enable communication between the immune system and cells in other organs).
She has dedicated most of her scientific and teaching career to Experimental Oncology. Through translational research (a special discipline that converts scientific discoveries into applied therapies), she has developed new therapies in the field of angiogenesis. The "in-vitro metastasis" technique, which continues to drive new discoveries worldwide, bears her name. She is also committed to issues such as the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases, including through her role as Chair of the Scientific Technical Committee of the Women's Health Observatory.
